About the university

Donghua University (DHU) is a national key university in Shanghai under the Ministry of Education of China, a member of «Project 211» and of the «Double First-Class» initiative. Founded in 1951, it is best known for textiles, materials and fashion design: its Textile Science and Engineering is ranked No. 1 in the world by ShanghaiRanking.

Admission for the 2027 intake

Bachelor's applicants take the CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment): for Chinese-taught majors — Professional Chinese (humanities or STEM version) and Mathematics, plus Physics and/or Chemistry for science and engineering majors; for English-taught majors — Mathematics (English version). Language test results must be dated September 1 of the year two years before the intake or later.

Donghua University has three campuses in Shanghai with a total area of about 1.33 million m² and more than 830,000 m² of floor space.

On-campus apartments

International students can live in on-campus apartments. Chinese Government, Shanghai Government (type A) and Confucius Institute scholarship holders are placed automatically; self-funded students book a room after admission.

Yan'an Road campus

Three international student apartment buildings with more than 1,000 beds. Rooms have a private bathroom, furniture, air conditioning, a refrigerator and an internet port; there are laundry rooms, lounges and study rooms.

Songjiang campus

Rooms have a TV, a refrigerator and an internet port; each floor has washing machines, water dispensers and shared bathrooms.

Internet is connected separately by the student. Accommodation fees are not refunded except for approved suspension or withdrawal. Off-campus housing is also allowed.

Shanghai Government Scholarship (SGS)

Applied for through Donghua University by choosing «SGS» in the application; no separate government application is needed. Deadline for the 2027 intake: April 15, 2027. Age: bachelor's under 25, master's under 35, PhD under 40.

Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS)

A full Chinese Government Scholarship covers tuition, on-campus accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance and a monthly stipend: 2,500 CNY for bachelor's, 3,000 CNY for master's and 3,500 CNY for PhD students.

International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship

English-taught bachelor's programs at SCF are not eligible for entrance scholarships. Scholarship durations follow the admission notice and generally cannot be extended.

History

Donghua University traces its roots to 1912 and was founded in its current form in 1951 as China's first higher education institution specializing in textiles.

Seven DHU disciplines are in the top 1% of ESI, with Chemistry and Materials Science in the top 0.1%.
