Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) is an elite public research university in South Korea, founded in 1993 and part of the "Big Four" leading science and technology universities in the country alongside KAIST, DGIST, and UNIST. It is located in Gwangju — a major city in the southwestern part of the Korean Peninsula, near the national science park.
The university comprises 7 graduate-level schools covering physics and photonics, chemistry, life sciences, electrical engineering and computer science, mechanical engineering, materials science, and environmental sciences, as well as a dedicated undergraduate college — GIST College, established in 2010. All undergraduate programs are taught entirely in English. For nearly two decades, GIST has consistently ranked among the world's top five universities in the "citations per faculty" metric of the QS World University Rankings. The university is a global leader in photonics and laser technologies, and one of Korea's national centers for artificial intelligence and robotics development. All students receive full coverage of tuition and accommodation costs, as well as a monthly stipend.

The GIST campus is located in the Buk-gu district of Gwangju city at 123 Cheomdan-gwagiro, covering an area of approximately 628,100 square meters. The grounds are entirely flat, with no hills, and are beautifully landscaped — the campus resembles a spacious park, making it a pleasant place to walk or cycle around.
Dining and everyday needs are covered by an on-campus restaurant, two cafeterias, a laundry facility, a barber shop, and a fitness club. All students are guaranteed a place in an on-campus dormitory fully equipped for comfortable living — housing costs are included in the scholarship package and are automatically deducted from the monthly allowance.
