Hainan University (HNU) is the only Project 211 and Double First-Class university in Hainan Province, a comprehensive key university co-built by the Ministry of Education and the Hainan Provincial Government. It was formed in August 2007 by merging the South China University of Tropical Agriculture (founded in 1958) and the original Hainan University (founded in 1983). Crop Science has been selected as a world-class discipline in two consecutive rounds of the Double First-Class initiative.
HNU covers philosophy, economics, law, literature, science, medicine, agriculture, engineering, management and art, with leading research in tropical agriculture, marine science, food science, tourism, ecology and the Hainan Free Trade Port. It was the first institution in Hainan Province qualified to enroll Chinese Government Scholarship students and runs a full bachelor-master-doctoral system for international students. Campuses in Haikou, Danzhou and Sanya cover 400.73 hectares on a tropical island with visa-free entry for citizens of 59 countries.

Hainan University is the most internationally open university of the Hainan Free Trade Port.
