Bachelor's. The KIT guidelines require 12 years of school education (category A), an IB, Abitur, French Baccalaureate or A Level qualification (B–E), or, where school takes less than 12 years, a preparatory course in Japan designated by Japan's Ministry of Education (MEXT) (category G). The guidelines have no separate category for 11-year curricula that MEXT recognizes as equivalent to 12 years (Kazakhstan since July 27, 2007, Russia since October 6, 2009) — eligibility of such graduates must be confirmed with the university before applying.
Education | Eligible | What to do |
|---|---|---|
11 years of school in Kazakhstan or Russia | Not stated in the guidelines — the 11-year school of these countries is recognized by MEXT | Confirm in writing with the university before applying; reliable routes are a preparatory course in Japan (G) or IB / A Level |
11 years of school in Kyrgyzstan | Not directly — under 12 years and not on the MEXT list | A MEXT-designated preparatory course in Japan (G) by March 31 of the entry year, or IB or A Level |
12 years of school (NIS, an international school with 12 grades) | Yes, category A | Apply directly |
IB, A Level, Abitur, French Baccalaureate | Yes, categories B–E | Apply directly |
College after grade 11 | Likely yes — over 12 years of study in total | Confirm with the university before applying; attach the school certificate and college diploma with transcript |
College after grade 9 | University decides | Confirm with the university before applying: grade 9 certificate, college diploma with transcript, education history |
For everyone: the EJU (Japanese 280 of 400 or higher, Mathematics Course 2 at least 120 of 200, sciences) and TOEFL iBT, followed by an essay and an interview in Kyoto. UNT, ORT and EGE do not replace them. Applicants from abroad must notify the admissions office in advance (for 2027 entry — by July 17, 2026). A Student visa is required on enrollment.
Master's. 16 years of education are required. A 4-year bachelor's after 11-year school is 15 years, so graduates of universities in Kazakhstan, Russia and Kyrgyzstan with a 4-year degree go through an individual eligibility review (for April 2027 — by October 5, 2026; for the Japanese-taught exam this route also requires 1 year of research after graduation and age 22 or older). A 5-year specialist degree or a master's at home is 16 years or more — apply directly. For the IGP with 15 years of education, confirm eligibility with the IGP office before applying.
PhD. A master's or specialist degree is required; without one — an individual eligibility review in advance.
The university runs the KYOTO Design Lab (since 2014), a hub for joint design and architecture projects with overseas universities, plus research centers for semiconductors, biomaterials and fibers. The student-to-staff ratio is about 14.6 to 1.
