Nazarbayev University is located in Astana, the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The university was founded on 28 June 2010 on the initiative of the first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, and is the country's flagship institution. It is the first university in Kazakhstan built on the principles of autonomy and academic freedom. All instruction is conducted in English.
The university has a modern campus in the heart of Eurasia. Most of the faculty (around 70%) are international specialists, and the majority of the Kazakhstani staff have significant international experience or foreign qualifications. The total number of students is about 7,000, including approximately 4,790 undergraduate students and 1,691 master's and doctoral students. About three percent of the students are international. In addition to its main programs, the university runs a Foundation Year Program, which helps students transition from the school system to studying in English.
Nazarbayev University conducts research in the fields of engineering, medicine, earth sciences, digital technologies, public administration, and education. Since its founding, the university has established partnerships with leading universities and research centers in 22 countries, promoting student and faculty exchange as well as joint research projects.
