About the University

New York University Shanghai (NYU Shanghai) is China's first Sino-US research university and the third degree-granting campus of the NYU global network, alongside New York and Abu Dhabi. It was founded in 2012 by New York University and East China Normal University with the support of the city of Shanghai and the Pudong district.

Teaching is entirely in English and follows the American liberal arts model: students take a shared Core Curriculum, choose one of 19 majors, can combine majors, pursue a double major or design their own course of study. About half of the nearly 2,000 students come from China, the rest from the United States and some 70 other countries. Undergraduate graduates receive degrees from both NYU and NYU Shanghai.

Undergraduate Admissions

• Applications are submitted through the Common Application, with NYU Shanghai selected as the primary or an alternate campus of interest.
• One-time non-refundable application fee: 85 US dollars for the bachelor's program (a fee waiver can be requested); 60 US dollars for the Social Work master's; 85 US dollars for the Public Administration PhD.
• Deadlines for Fall 2027 entry: Early Decision I — November 1, 2026; Early Decision II — January 1, 2027; Regular Decision — January 5, 2027.
• Early Decision is binding: an applicant admitted with an affordable aid package must accept the offer within 25 days.
• Applicants submit one type of test results: SAT, ACT, three AP exams, the IB Diploma, or a national exam approved by NYU.

English Language Requirements

Non-native English speakers must submit an English test unless they have completed three or more consecutive years in a curriculum taught only in English. There are no minimum scores; competitive applicants usually have:

Tuition and Fees for International Students

New Bund Campus in Qiantan

Since spring 2023 NYU Shanghai has been based on its New Bund campus in the Qiantan neighborhood of Pudong. The nine-story campus of about 114,000 square meters consists of four interlocked buildings set around an academic quadrangle, designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox together with the Arcplus Institute of Shanghai Architectural Design and Research. Its courtyard combines a Western cloister-style quadrangle with a Chinese scholars' garden.

Jinyao Residence Hall

Conditions and Deadlines

• Need-based grants are determined from the CSS Profile; it is filed once, before admission.
• CSS Profile deadlines: November 10, 2026 for Early Decision I, January 10, 2027 for Early Decision II, February 1, 2027 for Regular Decision.
• Early Decision applicants cannot compare aid offers from other universities, but the aid process itself is the same.
• US federal aid is available only to US citizens and permanent residents.
• The Doctoral Fellowship is part of the PhD offer and requires no separate application.
• There are no institutional grants for summer programs; visiting students can use outside scholarships or private loans.

Part of the NYU Global Network

NYU Shanghai is one of three degree-granting NYU campuses, together with New York and Abu Dhabi. Students can spend semesters at other NYU campuses and academic centers around the world, and students from New York, Abu Dhabi and other universities come to Shanghai for semesters, the January Term and summer sessions.

Joint Graduate Programs

• Master's programs with NYU Stern start with a summer term in New York and continue in Shanghai.
• The Social Work master's combines a generalist curriculum in Shanghai with clinical specialization in New York and 900 hours of practicum in both cities.
• PhD students complete coursework in New York alongside other NYU doctoral students and then conduct research in Shanghai.
