Shaanxi University of Technology was founded in 1958 and is among the first higher education institutions in China permitted to award bachelor's degrees. Today, the university has two campuses in the north and south of Hanzhong, covering a total area of 1.28 million square metres. It is home to more than 23,000 students, including over 2,000 graduate students, and its academic structure comprises 15 secondary schools, 3 colleges, and a Sino-foreign cooperative education institution. Students can choose from 52 undergraduate majors and 25 master's degree programs.
The university actively develops international cooperation within the "Belt and Road" initiative and pays special attention to students from Central Asia: it has established partnerships with overseas universities and attracts international experts and scholars to teach on campus.
The campus is designed so that students rarely need to leave for everyday errands. The grounds include a post office, a mini-supermarket, a barbershop, a hospital, and ATMs. Students can dine in two campus cafeterias offering a wide variety of food: Chinese cuisine, fast food, local specialities, baked goods and desserts, as well as Muslim (halal) food — a particular convenience for students from Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
International students live in a dedicated International Students Dormitory on campus, with four students sharing a room. Each room is furnished with beds and mattresses, desks, chairs, and wardrobes, and comes with air conditioning and a private bathroom.
Sports life on campus is highly varied. Outdoors, there are basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts, football pitches, and swimming pools. The indoor sports centre offers badminton and table tennis courts as well as fitness gyms. After classes, students can easily find activities to suit their interests — from team sports to fitness.
The university is located in Hanzhong, a cosy city in the southwest of Shaanxi Province, set in a scenic valley between the Qinling and Bashan Mountains. Xi'an is about an hour and a half away by high-speed train. Hanzhong has a history of more than 2,300 years and a mild climate: winters are considerably warmer than in Kazakhstan (averaging +2.4 °C in January), while summers are warm and humid. The cost of living in Hanzhong is noticeably lower than in China's major cities, making it a comfortable place to study.
