SJTU has no country-specific rules — everyone applies under the general requirements, with the national exam (UNT, ORT, EGE) submitted as the entrance exam result; without it, a written explanation is required. Pre-university — school certificate, HSK 4 180+ or IELTS 5.5, age 16–23; language courses — passport and age 18–55.

All English- and French-taught programmes include compulsory Chinese courses, and HSK 4 is required to graduate. Global Institute of Future Technology graduates receive a bachelor's degree in engineering.

SJTU rooms are booked online before the start of the academic year; students may also rent off campus. School of Medicine dormitories have air conditioning (heating and cooling), basic furniture, free internet and bedding.

Applicants not selected for CSC are automatically considered for Shanghai, SJTU and school scholarships. Age limits: master's under 35, PhD under 40.

At SJTU the Shanghai scholarship for bachelor's is merged into the SJTU Scholarship — no separate application, just tick the scholarship box in the form. For MBBS the Shanghai scholarship is awarded by the School of Medicine. For master's and PhD, choose «Apply for scholarships through SJTU»; deadline March 31, 2027.
Conditions: bachelor's under 25, master's under 35, PhD under 40; no other scholarship at the same time; annual review — failing it suspends or cancels the award; the university, major and study period cannot be changed. Professional master's (MBA, finance, accounting, etc.) are generally not eligible.
Apply via the Chinese embassy at home, listing SJTU as first choice. Coverage follows CSC rules; SJTU does not provide free on-campus housing — instead an accommodation subsidy of 1,100 RMB a month.
Online applications open on March 1; for programmes starting in March 2027 the deadline is October 31, 2026. Recipients go through an annual assessment.
