Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) is a multidisciplinary public university specializing in shipping, logistics, and ocean-related studies. It is located in Shanghai and is under the administration of the Shanghai Municipal Government.
History and Status:
The university's history dates back to 1909, when the Shipping Section of Nanyang Higher Industrial School was established, laying the foundation for higher maritime education in China. In 2004, the institution gained university status and its current name. Today, it is a joint project of the Shanghai Municipal Government and the Ministry of Transport of China, and since 2018, it has been included among Shanghai's leading higher education institutions.
Structure and Students:
The university has over 26,000 students, including more than 16,000 undergraduates, nearly 8,000 master's and doctoral students, as well as over 600 international students from various countries. The faculty consists of approximately 1,200 full-time teachers, including about 200 professors.
The university offers 52 undergraduate programs, as well as master's and doctoral programs across a wide range of fields.

International Cooperation:
The university maintains close ties with more than 100 international institutions and organizations, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Since 2010, an international class has been operating here, offering programs in marine technology and shipping management for students from foreign maritime universities.

Since 2008, the university's main campus has been located in the Lingang area of the Pudong New District, at 1550 Haigang Avenue.

International Students Dormitory
The International Students Dormitory is located at the Lingang Campus and is exclusively for international students. It was built in recent years, so the facilities are relatively new. Each room is equipped with a private bathroom, air-conditioner, internet access, refrigerator, and closet. The dormitory is close to commercial streets and the canteen, with convenient transportation nearby.
Accommodation Fees at Lingang Campus:
Suite (single rooms): 40 RMB per day per bed (6000 RMB per semester)
Single suite (bunk bed): 30 RMB per day per bed (4500 RMB per semester)
Double suite (bunk bed): 20 RMB per day per bed (3000 RMB per semester)
Double rooms are also available for approximately 1200 RMB per month.
Utilities and Energy:
SMU provides free energy credits at the start of each semester:
Water: 3 yuan per ton — 5 tons per student per month free
Electricity: 0.636 yuan per kW — 70 kW per room per month free
Gas: 2.5 yuan per meter — 8 meters per student per month free
When credits are used up, students pay extra. Electricity can be recharged using the student card at the multimedia charging machine in Room B104. Fees for gas and water are payable at reception.
