Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU) is a multidisciplinary, applied research university co-established by the State Oceanic Administration, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. Its main campus is located in Lingang New City, Pudong, Shanghai.
In September 2017 the university was selected by the Ministry of Education into China's «Double First-Class» initiative for its first-class discipline of Fisheries, and it was confirmed in the second round in February 2022. Fisheries science received an A+ rating in the national discipline assessment, and five disciplines are in the ESI global top 1%: plant and animal science, agricultural sciences, environment and ecology, engineering, biology and biochemistry.

International students can apply for Chinese-taught bachelor's programs (4 years), the 1+4 program with a Chinese-language preparatory year, English- and Chinese-taught master's programs (3 years) and English-taught PhD programs (4 years). Bachelor applicants must take the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA); master's and PhD applicants must first obtain the approval of a SHOU supervisor.

Admitted students receive an electronic admission package (admission notice and JW201/JW202 visa form). New students must study offline in Shanghai from September 2027; deferment is not allowed.

The university has more than 30 provincial and ministerial key laboratories and platforms, national engineering research centres and its own research vessels for ocean fisheries research.
SHOU offers on-campus international student apartments with over 300 beds. The ground floor has a common area with a study lounge, activity room, kitchens and laundry rooms. All rooms have air conditioning, a bed, desk, wardrobe and other basic furniture.

SHOU traces its history to 1912 and has developed from a provincial fisheries school into a multidisciplinary university with a leading position in fisheries science.

SHOU has cooperation agreements with more than 140 overseas universities and research institutions. Since 2011, over 4 000 SHOU students have studied abroad through short-term and long-term overseas programs.
