Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE) is the first commercial university in China's history and today one of the country's leading universities for finance, economics and business. Founded in 1917, it is under the Ministry of Education and co-developed with the Ministry of Finance and the Shanghai Municipal Government. The university is part of Project 211 and the Double First-Class initiative.

Beyond economics, finance and management, SUFE is strong in law, statistics, public administration and the humanities. Among international students the most popular majors are finance, international economics and trade, and teaching Chinese.
SUFE has welcomed international students since 1957 and opened the International Cultural Exchange School (ICES) in 2001. It offers Chinese- and English-taught bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs, practical and business Chinese courses and a pre-university program. International students enjoy cultural festivals, tea art and calligraphy classes, and sports and cultural clubs.
The campus is in Yangpu District in northeastern Shanghai, the city's university district. A Metro Line 18 station is right on campus, with Line 3 and the Wujiaochang business center nearby.

SUFE has three campuses covering about 55 hectares in Yangpu District, northeastern Shanghai. The Metro Line 18 station Shanghai University of Finance and Economics is on campus, and Jiangwan Town station on Line 3 is a 5-minute walk away. Language programs are held at the International Cultural Exchange School near the Wujiaochang business area.
Rooms are booked after tuition payment on a first-come, first-served basis. If no place is available, students arrange housing off campus.

Applicants not awarded the Shanghai scholarship are automatically considered for the SUFE scholarship. Pre-university graduates with HSK 4–5 get priority in selection.

As a specialized university it ranks lower in overall tables, but in finance and economics it is among China's best.
SUFE partners with universities across Asia, Oceania, Europe and North America. About 300 SUFE students study abroad every year, and the university hosts international students from 90+ countries.
