About the University

The University of Tokyo was established in 1877 as the first national university in Japan. It offers courses in essentially all academic disciplines at undergraduate and graduate levels and has three main campuses: Hongo, Komaba and Kashiwa. Most traditional undergraduate courses are taught in Japanese, but UTokyo also runs degree programmes taught entirely in English.

English-Taught Routes for International Students

• UTokyo College of Design (bachelor's + master's, 5 years): the first cohort starts on September 1, 2027. The PEAK undergraduate programme took its final intake in September 2026.
• More than 20 English-taught master's and doctoral programmes in engineering, science, medicine, agriculture, economics, environmental studies and public policy.
• A Japanese-taught undergraduate route for graduates of foreign schools also exists and requires a high level of Japanese.

UTokyo College of Design: Route B Timeline (2027 Entry)

• 100 places per year: 50 for Route A (Japanese Common Test) and 50 for Route B (international standardized tests).
• Application fee: 17,000 JPY (13,000 JPY refunded to those who fail the first screening).
• Applicants to the College of Design cannot apply to other UTokyo undergraduate programmes for April 2027.

Academic Requirements (Route B)

The Unified Entrance Examination for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia is not on the list of accepted tests; applicants from these countries apply with SAT, ACT, IB or A-Level results.

English Requirements (Route B)

Applicants with English-medium education for at least three of the last four school years are exempt. Only tests taken on or after January 1, 2025 are accepted.

Fees

MEXT (Japanese government) scholarship holders do not pay admission and tuition fees.

Campuses

• Hongo Campus (Bunkyo, Tokyo): the historic main campus with most graduate schools, including Yasuda Auditorium and the Akamon gate.
• Komaba Campus (Meguro, Tokyo): College of Arts and Sciences, where undergraduates study during their first two years, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
• Kashiwa Campus (Chiba): Graduate School of Frontier Sciences and research institutes.

UTokyo College of Design students live together in a dormitory in their first year, take courses across all faculties through the Interdisciplinary Foundations curriculum and complete long-term internships in Japan or abroad in their fourth year.

Housing

All first-year UTokyo College of Design students must live in the university dormitory (Mejirodai International Village).

Costs are as of July 2026. Graduate students can apply for university housing through the UTokyo Housing Office; availability is limited.

UTokyo College of Design Scholarships (grants, no repayment)

Results for both are announced on February 20, 2027. Needs-based scholarship recipients cannot also receive admission or tuition fee exemptions.
