Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) traces its history to Nanyang Public School, founded in Shanghai in 1896; its main body moved to Xi'an in 1956. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, a member of the C9 League and of the 211, 985 and Double First-Class programmes, ranked 10th in China in BCUR 2026 and #295 in the QS World University Rankings 2025. Its engineering is world-class: Mechanical Engineering has been ranked first in the world in GRAS since 2021. International students can take Chinese- and English-taught bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes as well as Chinese language courses and pre-university foundation programmes.

Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU, 西安交通大学) traces its history to Nanyang Public School, founded in Shanghai in 1896. In 1956 the main body of Jiaotong University moved to Xi'an, and in 1959 it received its current name. Today it is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, a member of the C9 League — China's Ivy League — and of the 211, 985 and Double First-Class programmes.

Age: Chinese language courses 18–45, foundation under 24, bachelor's under 25, master's under 35, PhD under 40; applicants under 18 submit a guardian's authorisation. Native speakers of Chinese or English may be exempted from the certificate.

CSCA for bachelor's applicants

All bachelor's applicants take the CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment) and attach the score report. The required subjects depend on the major and are listed in XJTU's official programme list.

Selection process

document review in the online system, then payment of the application fee;
academic review: grades, language certificate, CSCA results (bachelor's) and an interview;
many master's and almost all PhD programmes require an acceptance letter from a supervisor;
admitted students register in early September.

Campus Xi'an Jiaotong University

Xingqing Campus

The main campus in the centre of Xi'an, at No. 28 Xianning West Road next to Xingqing Palace Park, about 3 km from the Bell and Drum Towers. It houses most science, engineering, management, economics and humanities schools, as well as the School of International Education, its admissions office and the foundation programme centre.

Yanta Campus

The west campus on Zhuque Street, home to the Health Science Center: the schools of basic medicine, public health and pharmacy, nursing, and the English-taught MBBS programme. Two of the university's affiliated hospitals are nearby.

Qujiang Campus

A campus on Yanxiang Road in the Qujiang district of Xi'an.

Innovation Harbour (iHarbour)

The China Western Science and Technology Innovation Harbour is XJTU's new research campus outside central Xi'an, combining teaching, labs and industry partners. Many research institutes and schools have moved here, and English-taught engineering students also study here.

Accommodation

International students live on three campuses: Xingqing, Yanta and the Innovation Harbour. Rooms are assigned by the university each year according to current policy, and students book them online.
