Founded in 1924, it has developed into one of the major universities in western China and is part of the national Double First-Class initiative; it was also previously included in Project 211.
The university offers programs across a wide range of fields, including engineering, computer science, chemistry, economics, law, languages, management, science and humanities. Its three national Double First-Class disciplines are Marxist Theory, Chemistry, and Computer Science & Technology.
Xinjiang University has three main campuses in Ürümqi: Honghu, Boda, and Youhao Together, they cover about 4,790 mu (approximately 319 hectares) The Boda Campus is the largest, followed by Honghu and Youhao The campuses provide modern academic buildings, libraries, sports facilities, student accommodation, and other amenities
