The history of Zhejiang University begins in 1897, when the Qiushi Academy was founded in Hangzhou. In 1928, the institution was renamed National Chekiang University.
A particularly important stage in the history of ZJU is associated with the activities of Professor Chu Kochen, who headed the university from 1936. The modern Zhejiang University was formed in 1998 through the merger of four universities: Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University, and Zhejiang Medical University.
